What is MTPE? For which types of text is MTPE suitable?
The use of artificial intelligence is increasing rapidly, especially in the translation industry. But what exactly is Machine Translation Post-Editing (MTPE)? MTPE is the magic formula of machine translation combined with the review and post-editing of the machine translated text by a human translator called the post-editor. The post-editor plays a crucial part in the machine translation process, especially when it comes to editing highly technical translations. Despite technological improvements, semantic errors in a machine translation are inevitable given the nuance and complexity of human language. Only experienced post-editors are able to spot and correct such errors.
Requirements: It is necessary to check in advance whether a text is suitable for machine translation at all, and whether the quality of the machine translation will be such that it can save the customer both time and money. If the MTPE process takes longer than a human translation, you should definitely opt for the latter.
The following types of text are, in most cases, suitable for MTPE:
- Standardized texts
- Short-lived texts such as social media feeds, e-mail correspondence, information-gathering texts or chat bots
- Non-technical texts without long complicated sentences
However, machine translation is not recommended for complex technical texts or marketing content in particular.
2 Post-Editing-Levels:
ISO 18587 distinguishes between full and light post-editing.
- Full Post-Editing: The result is similar to a human translation
- Light Post-Editing: The result is an articulate text
Price: In comparison to a traditional human translation, it is possible to save around 30 percent using post-editing.
